Milk Can Ice Cream Stand, South Dartmouth, MA

Salvador's Ice Cream

This milk can shaped building is the home to Salvador’s Ice Cream.  The Salvador family first started scooping ice cream here in 1936. The building had been moved from New Bedford, Mass., to its current location a year earlier. The Gauvin family took over the business in 2005 and began restoring the 30-foot-high building, receiving praise from the New Bedford Historical Society. The building was returned to its original colors and a cow (“Smith Neck Nellie”) was placed at the top to replace one that was lost in a 1938 hurricane.  Visited August 2014.

Location: 460 Smith Neck Road, just south of Rock Odundee Road
