Toll House Inn, Whitman, MA

Toll House InnThis is the site of the Toll House Inn, where the famous Toll House Chocolate Chip Cookie was created.  Owner Ruth Graves Wakefield came up with the recipe about eight years after she and her husband bought the restaurant in 1930.  There seems to be conflicting stories about how the cookie was invented: some reports say it was deliberate while others say it occurred by accident when she used chocolate chunks thinking they would melt and make chocolate cookies.  There are also conflicting stories as to whether the restaurant was actually ever a toll house.  In any case,  the restaurant burned down in 1984.  The restaurant sign and a historical marker are located at the site, which is now a parking lot between a Wendy’s and Walgreens. The Wendy’s reportedly features historical pictures and articles about the restaurant.   Visited August 2014.

Location:  Just north of the intersection of routes 14 and 18.
