Lizzie Borden House, Fall River, MA

Lizzie Borden House

Most likely, you’ve heard the rhyme: “Lizzie Borden took an ax and gave her mother 40 whacks. When she saw what she had done, she gave her father 41.”  Yes, her father and STEPmother were killed by an ax, but there were “only” about 30 whacks total. Who committed the awful crimes has never been determined.  Lizzie was tried and found innocent in what was billed “the trial of the century.” The murders occurred in this house where the Borden family lived; it’s now a bed and breakfast.  Although the house is original, the furnishings are not. They were destroyed while in storage; however, the B&B owners have gone to great effort to find authentic replacements.

Fifty-minute tours are offered of the house; people who spend the night get a longer, more in-depth tour, including the basement (spooky!). The tour is historical in nature, but also tongue-in-cheek, and guests will hear about what happened that August in 1892 and the subsequent trial from beginning to end. There are a number of pictures, artifacts and even movie memorabilia (a costume worn by Elizabeth Montgomery in the made-for-TV movie, “The Legend of Lizzie Borden“). Additional artifacts are on display at the Fall River Historical Society.  Visited August 2014.
